Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to pile the praise on Jordan Willis, following his performance in the 1-0 win over Oxford on Saturday. The man who signed on a free transfer in the summer after leaving Coventry was making his 30th start of the League One campaign, and marked the occasion with an excellent display as the Black Cats grabbed yet another win.
According to SofaScore, Willis made three clearances and registered two interceptions, while also winning one tackle and drawing one foul from the opposition.
The 25-year-old also won two out of his three duels both on the ground and in the air, while having 42 touches of the ball.
Additionally, he looked to have grabbed the game’s only goal after appearing to head home a first-half corner, although the strike later went down as an own goal from Oxford’s John Mousinho.
The win means that Sunderland now sit fifth in the table, just three points behind first-placed Rotherham.
Let’s see what the Black Cats fans on Twitter have been saying about Willis…
To kick off the reaction, these two supporters both tipped the centre-back to win the club’s Player of the Season award.
Michael Oates said that the Englishman is an “early shout” for the award, while Michael Potts added that he “has to be up there” for it – the latter fan also called Willis the “heartbeat” of the defence as well as a “tremendous player”.
Elsewhere, there was more praise for the Sunderland No.4.
Liam said that he has become the club’s “most consistent player” and also called him a “top defender”.
Ali then went one step further than that, branding Willis the “best defender in League One” – high praise indeed.
Lastly, these two supporters highlighted the fact that Willis was signed on a free.
@SAFCFANSVIEW said “let’s remember” that the recruitment team captured the defender for nothing before using two applauding emojis to praise the department.

David Boyle then labelled the Sunderland star as “easily the best signing we’ve made since the decline” and also branded him as “very impressive” – it’s safe to say these fans were left drooling over Willis’ display.
