Celtic are on the verge of signing Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull and the man who signed him up to the Steelmen, Gordon Young, believes he can play at the top level, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
What’s he said?
Motherwell announced earlier this week that they had agreed a fee with Celtic for the transfer of Turnbull and he’s expected to be announced as a Hoops player before long.
The North Lanarkshire club say he will be their most valuable export ever, reward for all the hard work they have put into developing the player from a young age.
Leigh Griffiths is ready and raring to go for Celtic next season. One fan discusses what we can expect from him in the video below…
Gordon Young, formerly Head of Youth Development at the Steelmen, has been reflecting on bringing Turnbull to the club and reckons he can one day play at an elite level, potentially even captaining Scotland.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said:
“From the moment we saw David, it was a no-brainer. It was easy to see his potential.
He was different to anything we were producing and he always reminded me of Gary McAllister, who loved getting on the ball and dictating play.
I’ve no doubt about the heights David can reach. I can see him captaining Scotland like Gary and playing at the top level in England or abroad.
He’s such a down-to-earth boy, with a fantastic family, who were so supportive and a joy to deal with. They will be so proud of him.”
Turnbull’s potential
Turnbull’s debut full season as a senior player certainly backs up Young’s comments, scoring and assisting at a level most clubs in the Scottish Premiership would be envious of.
Moving to Lennoxtown and working with better players in training on a regular basis will only enhance the talent he already has and with some exposure to first-team football under Neil Lennon, Turnbull has a real shot of becoming an accomplished professional.
He’ll add real energy and attacking ambition to the Hoops midfield in the short-term and even though he is still just 19 years of age can certainly make an impact next season.
He’s one to watch in 2019/20.
