Crystal Palace had a particular busy previous summer transfer window in terms of the number of new players they brought in and equally the number of players they moved out in the other direction.
However, as tends to happen a lot of the time with almost every club, they didn’t end up signing every player they were reportedly after.
One player, in particular, that the Eagles were linked with last summer that didn’t eventually make the move to Selhurst Park is midfielder Jens Cajuste, something they’ll no doubt be pleased about.
Having been touted for a move to several Premier League clubs such as Leeds United, Wolves and Newcastle United alongside Palace for a reported transfer fee of £13m from FC Midtjylland, the 22-year-old ended up staying at Danish club Midtjylland before eventually joining French club Stade Reims in the previous January transfer window.
This season has seen the Sweden international make just 14 appearances across all competitions for his current and previous clubs, scoring just one goal in the process.
Despite making just three appearances in Ligue 1 for Reims, the midfielder, who is currently valued at £4.5m according to Transfermarkt, has failed to show in his performances why so many clubs in the Premier League were after him, with WhoScored giving him an uninspiring overall rating of 6.36, making him one of the lowest-rated players currently in their squad to start at least one league game.
This rating would also make him one of the lowest-rated Palace players by the same metric, highlighting how the former Midtjylland midfielder may not have been the best option for the south London club had they secured his signature in the summer ahead of some of their fellow Premier League clubs.
Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that the Eagles dodged a fairly big bullet by not splashing out the reported fee of £13m that his previous side were apparently after.
Moving forward, with Palace having the likes of James McArthur and Cheikhou Kouyate in their squad that are now over the age of 30 as well as having Conor Gallagher set to leave at the end of the season after his current loan spell ends, the club should definitely be on the lookout, as they were last summer, to bring a new midfield option to Selhurst Park.
